The Academy Awards, known as the Oscar Awards, bring together movie lovers from all over the world and choose the best of the year. The Oscar Award for animation only came in 2002, and the first winner was Shrek. With seven awards and 9 nominations, Pixar Animation Studios is the most successful company in the "Best Animated Feature" category, leaving its competitors behind.

Although most of the animations on the list are classic animated films, we wanted to expand your list of movies to watch! Our list of the best animated movies is with you...

 

 

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs | 1938

While Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs didn't actually earn an Oscar nomination for best original film, Disney was given an honorary mention in recognition of its innovation in filmmaking. Disney even received a regular-size statue and seven miniature Oscars to mark the seven dwarfs in the movie.

The subject of the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; A princess driven into the dangerous forest by her evil stepmother is rescued by seven dwarf miners who have made the princess part of their home.

 

 

Pinocchio | 1940

Pinocchio became the first animated movie to officially win an Oscar. At the 13th Academy Awards, he won two Oscars for best original song and best original music for his composition "When You Wish Upon a Star".

In the movie Pinocchio, a living puppet with the help of a cricket with a conscience must prove that he is worthy of being a real boy.

 

 

Dumbo | 1941

Dumbo won the Oscar for best original score the following year. It was also nominated for best original song that year for "Baby Mine" but lost to "The Last Time I Saw Paris" from "Lady Be Good".

A young circus elephant, mocked for its enormous ears in the movie Dumbo, is assisted by a mouse to reach its full potential.

 

The Little Mermaid | 1990

After two decades of mostly forgettable movies, Walt Disney Animation Studios has released the critically acclaimed The Little Mermaid. It  won Oscars for best original song and best original score for "Under the Sea". 

In The Little Mermaid, a mermaid princess makes a bargain to become human and win the love of a prince.

 

 

Beauty and the Beast | 1992

Beauty and the Beast broke Oscar records in 92! The film was nominated for six Oscars, winning best original score and best original song for the song "Beauty and the Beast". "Be Our Guest" and "Belle" were also nominated for best original song. 

The film was also the first animated film in history to do so with a best picture nomination. It also won an award for best sound mixing. Along with Wall-E in 2008, it remains the most Oscar-nominated animated feature film. 

In Beauty and the Beast, a prince turned into a monster by a curse sets out to regain his humanity by winning the love of a young woman.

 

 

Aladdin | 1993

The film won the best original music and best original song awards for the song "A Whole New World". The song "Friend Like Me" was also nominated in the song category. Aladdin was also nominated for best sound and best sound effects editing.

The subject of Aladdin is; A kind-hearted street kid and a power-hungry grand vizier compete for a magic lamp that has the power to make his deepest wishes come true.

 

Lion King | 1995

Disney's popular movie The Lion King won Oscars for best music and best original song. "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" won an award, while the songs "Circle of Life" and "Hakuna Matata" were nominated in the song category.  

In Lion King, Simba the Lion Prince and his father are targeted by a vicious uncle who wants to ascend to the throne.

 

 

Pocahontas & Toy Story | 1996

1995 was a turning point for animations. Founded by a group of former Disney animators, Pixar released its first feature film, Toy Story, which is considered a masterpiece. The film competed in three nominations and director John Lasseter also received a special achievement award.

In the end, however, the traditional Disney movie prevailed. Pocahantas won both nominations. It won an award in the music category changed to "Original Musical or Comedy Music" and in the song category "Colors of the Wind". In short, although Toy Story had more nominations, Pocahontas won two Oscars.

In Pocahontas, British soldier and an Algonquin chief recounts their romance and adventures when British colonists invaded seventeenth-century Virginia. 

In Toy Story, a cowboy toy becomes uneasy when a boy loses the title of best toy in his room to a new astronaut figure.

 

 

The Prince of Egypt | 1999

Both Disney's Hercules and 20th Century Fox's Anastasia were nominated for the 1998 Oscars, but were somewhat ignored in those years due to Titanic's dominance. 

However, in 1999 The Prince of Egypt won an award for "When You Believe" in the best original song category. "The Prayer" from the movie Quest for Camelot was also nominated in this category. 

Also nominated for "Best Original Musical or Comedy Music", A Bug's Life and Mulan were nominated together, but lost the award to Shakespeare in Love.

In The Prince of Egypt, Prince Moses of Egypt learns about his identity as a Hebrew and his destiny to become the chosen savior of his people.

 

 

Tarzan | 2000

Disney scored another victory when "You'll Be in My Heart" won the award for best original song in Tarzan, directed by Phil Collins. Toy Story 2 was also nominated in the same category for Randy Newman's song "When She Loved Me".  

Tarzan's plot: A man raised by gorillas must decide where he truly belongs when he discovers he is a human.

 

 

Shrek | 2002

Shrek was the first winner of the Oscars in the animation category. Shrek, competed with Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and Pixar's Monsters, Inc. films. Shrek was also nominated for best adapted screenplay.

Monsters, Inc. The film won the original song award with the song "If I Don't Have You" and was nominated for the best original music and best sound editing.  

In Shrek, a mean lord banishes fairy-tale creatures into the swamp of a grumpy giant. Shrek, on the other hand, embarks on an adventure to reclaim his lands and must save a princess for the lord.

 

 

Spirited Away | 2003

Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece Spirited Away from Studio Ghibli received the best animation award.  

The English dubbing and screening of the movie was supervised by Disney, and it also won awards against Lilo & Stitch and Treasure Planet, two Disney movies. Ice Age and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron were also nominated in the category. 

In Spirited Away, while her family moves to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl travels to a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, where humans have been turned into monsters.

 

Finding Nemo | 2004

Finding Nemo earned Pixar its first Oscar win. The film competed against Brother Bear and The Triplets of Belleville in the best animated feature category. Nemo also received nominations for Best Original Screenplay, Music and Sound Editing.

In Finding Nemo, we witness the story of a timid clownfish and a father who, after his son is caught and taken to Sydney, embarks on a journey to bring his son home.

 

The Incredibles | 2005

Disney's Home on the Range was completely ignored by the Academy, while The Incredibles won in the categories for best animation and best sound editing. The film was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Sound Mixing. 

In the category of the best animated films, it competed against Shrek 2 and Shark Tale. 

The Incredibles: A family of undercover superheroes must take action to save the world as they try to live the quiet suburban life.

 

 

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit | 2006

Clay animation made with stop motion technique, Wallace & Gromit won the best animation award against Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle and Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. 

In the film, Wallace and his loyal dog Gromit set out to discover the mystery behind the garden sabotage that plagues their village and threatens the annual giant vegetable growing competition.

 

 

Happy Feet | 2007

Disney bought Pixar for $7.4 billion in 2006 but still lost to Happy Feet.

The purchase took place a month before the release of the Cars movie. But although Cars was nominated for best animated feature alongside Monster House, they both lost to Happy Feet from Warner Bros. 

In the movie Happy Feet, a penguin who cannot sing is born into the world of emperor penguins, who find their soul mates through song. But he can tap dance fiercely!

 

 

Ratatouille | 2008

Pixar's Ratatouille was nominated in the categories of original screenplay, music, sound editing, sound mixing, as well as the best animation award. In the best animation category, it was awarded against Persepolis and Surf's Up. 

In the movie, a mouse who can cook forms an unlikely alliance with a young kitchen worker at a famous restaurant.

 

 

Wall-E | 2009

Pixar's Wall-E won the best animation award against Disney's Bolt and Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda films. The film was nominated in the sound editing, sound mixing and song categories as well as original screenplay nominations. 

Until 2009, there were five films in the best film category, and the fact that Wall-E and Dark Knight were not included in this category in the same year caused much controversy. Thus, the number of films in the category was increased to 10. It was later modified to accept between five and ten candidates depending on an algorithm. 

In the distant future in the movie Wall-E, a small waste-collecting robot unwittingly embarks on a space journey that will determine the fate of humanity.

 

 

Up | 2010

Up was the first Pixar film to be nominated in this category, as the best picture category was nominated for ten, and the first animated film since Beauty and the Beast. But Up lost that award to The Hurt Locker. 

Up, which won the best animation and best soundtrack awards, was also nominated in the best original screenplay and best sound mixing categories.

Other films competing in the animation category of the same year are; Fantastic Mr. Fox, Coraline, The Princess and the Frog, and The Secret of Kells.

In the movie Up, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen accidentally picks up a young stowaway in his balloon-filled home to Paradise Falls.

 

 

Toy Story 3 | 2011

The sequel to the first two Toy Story movies that made Pixar a formidable force in the 1990s, Toy Story 3 has become one of Pixar's most acclaimed films. The film also received a nomination for best picture and a win in the animation category. In the best film category, it lost to The King's Speech.

The film also won the original soundtrack award for the song "We Belong Together" and was nominated for adapted screenplay and sound editing.

Other nominees in the animation category were How to Train Your Dragon and The Illusionist. Disney's princess movie Tangled was ignored. 

In Toy Story 3, before Andy goes to college, the toys are accidentally delivered to a nursery instead of the attic, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they haven't been abandoned and return home.

 

 

Rango | 2012

Johnny Depp's voicing of a Hawaiian-shirted lizard, Rango, won Paramount Studio's award for best animated feature despite not even having an official animated division.

Dreamworks was also nominated for Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda 2 films, as well as independent films A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita, and it can be said that it was successful in 2012.

Cars 2 is Pixar's first film not to be nominated for an Oscar. At the same time, Disney's Winnie the Pooh was not nominated.

Rango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally finds himself in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West that desperately needs a new sheriff.

 

Brave | 2013

Pixar once again won the animation category with the movie Brave, which did not receive any other nominations. Other nominees in the animation category are Frankenweenie, ParaNorman, The Pirates! Band of Misfits and Disney's Wreck-It Ralph.

Determined to carve her own path in life, Princess Merida challenges a tradition that has brought chaos to her kingdom in Brave. With one wish granted, Merida must rely on her courage and archery skills to undo a monstrous curse.

 

Frozen | 2014

Frozen is Disney Animation Studios' first film to win an animated feature award since Tarzan (2000). It also won the best original song award for the song "Let It Go". Pixar's Monsters University was ignored at the Oscars. 

Other nominees for animated films were The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest & Celestine, and Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises. 

As for Frozen, the newly crowned Queen Elsa accidentally uses her power to turn everything to ice and plunges her home into eternal winter. Her sister Anna works with a mountain man, her playful reindeer friend, and a snowman to save her sister and her curse.

 

Big Hero 6 | 2015

Big Hero 6 won the animated movie award, the only category for which it was nominated. Other nominees were The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Song of the Sea, and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Pixar, on the other hand, did not release any movies in 2014.

In Big Hero 6, a special bond develops between the big robot Baymax and the genius Hiro Hamada, who team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.

 

 

Inside Out | 2016

It's the first time Pixar has released two movies in one year. While The Good Dinosaur was overlooked, Inside Out won the animated film Oscar and received an original screenplay nomination. Still, it was not nominated for best picture.

Disney didn't release anything in 2015, and other nominees in the animation category were Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and When Marnie Was There.

In Inside Out, after young Riley is cut off from her midwestern life and moved to San Francisco, her feelings; Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness clash over how best to navigate and behave in a new city, home, and school.

 

Zootopia | 2017

Finding Dory, Pixar's long-awaited sequel to Finding Nemo, was ignored at the Oscars in 2017, while Disney's Zootopia won the Oscar for best animated feature. It was nominated along with Disney's Moana, Kubo and The Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini, and The Red Turtle.

In a city full of anthropomorphic animals in Zootopia, a rookie bunny cop and a sarcastic rogue fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.

 

 

Coco | 2018

The movie Coco won the best animated film category as well as the best song award with the song "Remember Me". The Boss Baby, Loving Vincent, Ferdinand and The Breadwinner movies were also in the best animation category. 

In the movie Coco, Miguel enters the Netherworld to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer, when his family's ancestors face the ban on music.

 

 

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse | 2019

Although Pixar released the long-awaited Incredibles sequel in 2018, it did not win an Oscar. The Oscar award went to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

An interdimensional Spider-Man story, with a focus on Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker, brought new variety to the franchise and pioneered a new style of animation inspired by hand-drawn comics.

Miles Morales becomes the Spider-Man of his universe and must unite with five spider-powered ones from other dimensions to stop a threat to all realities.

Other nominees in the category included Ralph Breaks the Internet, another Disney production, along with the films Mirai and Isle of Dogs.

 

 

Toy Story 4 | 2020

Toy Story 4, which was first announced in 2014, postponed several times and rewritten with a major script change, became the best animated film at the 2020 Oscars, despite the negativities.

When a new toy named "Forky" joins Woody and the gang in Toy Story 4, a journey with friends old and new reveals just how big the world can be for a toy.

Klaus, Missing Link, I Lost My Body and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World were also included in the best animation category.

 

 

Soul | 2021

Soul ravaged award ceremonies in 2021! Pixar's first black starring animated feature was named the best animated feature film of 2021.

Soul surpassed Onward, another Pixar movie, in addition to Over the Moon, Wolfwalkers, and A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.

In Soul, a New York jazz pianist suddenly finds himself trapped in a strange land between earth and the afterlife after giving the concert of his life.
